Classification of Plants

Plants are categorized into two main groups. It is based on the flowering nature of plants.




Plants

Flowering plants (bear flowers)
* Monocotyledonous
* Dicotyledonous
Non flowering plants (do not bear flowers)
* Plants with seeds
* Plants without seeds

FLOWERING PLANTS

* Bear flowers.

* Bear fruits

* Seeds are enclosed in fruits. ( Angiosperms)

* Angiosperms are divided into 2 groups. ( monocots & dicots)


Monocotyledonous plants (Monocots)


* One cotyledon in seed

* Unbranched stem.

* Fibrous roots

* Paralleled venation in leaves.

* Flower parts in multiple of 3.


Dicotyledonous plants (Dicots)


* Two cotyledon in seed.

* Branched stem.

* Tap root with lateral roots.

* Reticulated venation in leaves.

* Flower parts in multiple of 4 or 5.


NON FLOWERING PLANTS


* Do not bear flowers

* Do not bear fruits.

* Can be divided into two groups.( presence or absence of seeds)


Non flowering plants with seeds

* Do not produce fruits and flowers.

* Bear open seeds. Eg: Cycas, Pinus


Non flowering plants without seeds

* Propagation occur through spores.

Non flowering plants without seeds

Liverworts


Eg: Marchantia,

Mosses


Eg: Poganatum


Lycophyta

Eg: Selaginella,


Pterophyta

Eg: Nephrolepis
